You'll have to cross the Italian Peninsula from east to west to reach San Giovanni Rotondo. In fact it is situated in the Region of Puglia really close to the Adriatic Sea.
The Capuchin monastery of San Giovanni Rotondo is known for being the last residence of Padre Pio, where he lived for 50 years. He is revered as a saint by the Church and is known for the care for the sick and for his supernatural powers. He died in September 1968 and was buried in the Crypt of the old Church of St. Maria Delle Grazie.
Next to the monastery, in 2004, Renzo Piano, a famous architect built a new church dedicated to St.Pio. In march 2008, Padre Pio’s body was exhumed and put on public display in a glass coffin.
